1. Explain the rationale for and importance of understanding the similarities and differences of life cycle well-being and illness beliefs, values, customs, and lifeways of selected Western and non-Western cultures
2. Identify specific comparative transcultural factors that influence health care from birth to death including kinship, economic, political, legal, educational, technological, and religious patterns.
3. Explain the effects of acculturation and socialization processes on healthcare beliefs and practices related to birth, early childhood, adolescence, middle age, and older adults in industrial and non-industrial cultures.
4. Apply selected concepts, theories, and research findings related to transcultural health.
5. Compare the ways in which various cultures raise children to become members of the adult community.
6. Analyze the influences of ethno-history, ecology, environment, cultural context, and language on the development and use of folk (generic) and professional health care.
7. Evaluate culture-related conflicts, stressors, and barriers with regard to health care in the United States and health care reform proposals.

Please view the video, and think of an example of a “single story” that you’ve heard about a group or place that needs rejecting or expanding to “many stories.” In a short response please describe your example.

3. From the lecture, choose one example of where the intersection of religion and health care would be significant in your nursing practice (do not use the example of acceptance of blood by a practicing Jehovah Witness) . Discuss the problems that could arise when the nurse lacks understanding of the patient’s religious/spiritual beliefs and at least one specific, culturally congruent, intervention (20 points)
