Choose one of the poems we have read for class and write an analytical essay, discussing how the poem uses various poetic devices to convey meaning.
Suggestions for effective analysis:
– Read the poem out loud and listen for sound technique such as rhyme, meter, alliteration, assonance, consonance, etc.
– Annotate the poem, marking words you do not understand, and look for literary devices such as imagery, allusion, repetition, etc.
– Draft a thesis before you begin your essay, making sure that your essay is centered around arguing how certain devices or traits work to convey meaning. If need be, draft a full outline, noting what specific examples you will use from the poem.
Your essay should contain an arguable thesis, and you should support this thesis with strong evidence and analysis. Your essay should be organized and clear, and your sentences should be relatively free of grammatical and structural errors.
