Assignment
In this essay, you’ll take all the literature knowledge and skills you’ve developed so far in our class, research a specific topic or theme of speculative fiction that’s interesting to you, and then present a paper in which you prove your thesis about that idea with your Analysis. The research will only be used to support your ideas.
Remember
“Speculative fiction is any fiction in which the ‘laws’ of that world (explicit or implied) are different than ours,” according to Annie Neugebauer, two-time Bram Stoker Award-nominated short story author.
This means that speculative literature includes science fiction, dystopian literature, post-apocalyptic lit, fantasy, or horror.
Common topics/themes in speculative lit
These include but are not limited to class, gender roles, women, sexism, the idea of “others” that can include race, gender, relationships, sex/sexuality, family, children, language, mental health, technology, power, humanity, knowledge/education, religion/faith, propaganda, censorship, brain washing, conformity.
However, make sure your take on the topic is not one that’s overly used (e.g., technology creates a lack of social interaction). Also make sure the focus of this paper is completely different than your previous 2 papers.

Why are books/knowledge the first thing to be taken away by governments in dystopian lit?
Why are protagonists of science fiction so much more diverse now than they ever have been?
Why is humanity such a hot topic in post-apocalyptic texts?
