PART II. ONE ESSAY, (50 points) Write ONE essay on the following topic. Begin by constructing a clear and original thesis, then create an argument using consistent references to our course text(s). The essay should include quotes and citations and be no more than three pages with an MLA style Works Cited.
Define or describe the role of “blindness” in Homer’s The Odyssey. Who or what is blind? What truths (aletheia) are invisible to Odysseus and how does he overcome his own blindness? How is blindness connected to wisdom insight?
What is the role of Xenia in The Odyssey? What are some instances of good or bad Xenia? How is xenophobia related? What lessons myth about “xenia” from the ancient relate to cultural practices of hospitality today?
What is the meaning of home/nostos in The Odyssey. Why does it take Odysseus ten years to get home? Also explain the meaning of nostos/home in relation to Cavafy’s “Ithaka” or Keats “On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer.” (These are poems in our course shell). How are we, as readers and writers, also explorers traveling far from our own home?
Extra credit: Define Katabasis and explain in a few sentences how this Greek word relates to The Odyssey.
