Think back to the post-WWI and post-WWII periods. We learned about a number of neocolonial policies implemented by the Allies after these two conflicts, many of which were oriented towards either resource control or political influence in the Middle East. Some of the policies include The Sykes-Picot Agreement, The Balfour Declaration, The Treaties of Lausanne and San Remo, just to name a few. There were also a number of formal military invasions, interventions, and occupations from foreign powers including England, France, the Soviet Union/Russia, and the United States. Finally, there were also subversive actions from outsiders, such as coups, often performed to exacerbate the aforementioned policies (Operation Ajax being the most famous example). In what ways do you think all of this created the complicated situation the region finds itself in through today?
