Write a 3-5 page double-spaced (approximately 1,000-1,200 word) essay about Kurt Vonnegut’s short story “Harrison Bergeron” that makes some argument or point about the story (see below for examples and hints). Refer to at least two (2) outside critical articles in this essay from our library databases, quoting, paraphrasing, and/or summarizing the material appropriately and citing it in MLA format. You may use the articles “Teaching Conformity in Kurt Vonnegut’s ‘Harrison Bergeron’” by Lexi Stuckey and “The Politics of Kurt Vonnegut’s ‘Harrison Bergeron’” by Darry Hattenhauer that you have read and summarized. Take another look at those articles) and see how Stuckey and Hattenhauer cite sources in their essays both internally and in a works cited list—both articles are documented in MLA format (although you will need to place your works cited list on a separate page). You will, of course, want to use quotations from and cite the story “Harrison Bergeron.”
For internal citations, simply refer to the story and/or Kurt Vonnegut in the sentence where you are quoting or paraphrasing, or if you must use a parenthetical citation, just use Vonnegut’s last name like this (Vonnegut).
Some possible prompts: These may help you form your thesis, but don’t feel trapped by them—you can modify these or come up with your own if you wish.
With whom do you think Vonnegut sympathizes in the story? Does he present Harrison as a hero, or is the story without a real hero? Why?
What is being satirized in this story? Why do you think Vonnegut wrote it?
Is Vonnegut’s story finally a cautionary tale about the importance of freedom? Of individuality? Of human excellence? Or is he aiming at something else?
